Are You Up to the Challenge?

thumb it up Sheila Hawkins
As we all know, life challenges us on a regular basis. Accomplishing the goals that we set can be one of the challenges that we face. We set our goals and focus and we're off to a great start, full of enthusiasm and determination. Then, something happens. We get distracted, tired, we hit speed bumps in the road, get discouraged, and ultimately give up and our goals dissipate.

Is this where you're at with your goals for this year? Are you like the 35% surveyed by Franklin Covey who break their resolutions by the end of January? If so, let me ask you two things:

1) How committed are you? When you are truly committed to your goals, you are naturally motivated to achieve them. Your degree of commitment indicates the likelihood of your achieving the goal.

2) Are you passionate about your goals? Passion can help you overcome the distractions and being tired as well as the speed bumps in the road.

If you find that your level of commitment is low and/or that you aren't passionate about the goals you've set revisit them and look to see if they're in line with your values. Recreate your goals if necessary, being specific with time frames and deadlines. Recommit and then re-energize.

To keep the momentum, stay focused. This requires your dedication and vision. Plan by reviewing your list of goals and create the related tasks. As you review your list, note which goals challenge you the most. Pay attention to how you act in relation to those particular goals. Maybe you feel overwhelmed or anxious; maybe fear creeps in on you or perhaps you begin to doubt yourself. Ask yourself why these things come up for you and address them head-on.

Don't let anything on your list fall off of your radar, and above all, don't forget the “why”. Remember that “why” is related to the big picture and can be a great motivator for you. If you find yourself challenged, revisit the “why”. Allow your passion for the goals that you've set to be the fuel that puts you into action and keeps you going.
